OVERREACTION WEEK! My favorite (but not really) time of the season! Not an overraction: SEATTLE WAS GIVEN FOUR TIMEOUTS INSIDE THEIR OWN 20 WITH LESS THAN TWO MINUTES LEFT IN THE GAME! Any more complaining and my head will explode (and someone will have to submit my remains to the NFL and fill out an application for said remains to become a replacement ref). Let's just get right into it.
Robert Griffin III, QB - Washington Redskins - The chosen one in our nation's capital had everyone's head turning on Sunday, including doubters. After the monster day that helped upset the New Orleans Saints, Griffin will likely be the hottest waiver wire pickup across all leagues. What's most intriguing and tempting about cashing in on Griffin's abilities is that he was able to put up a top-3 fantasy day withOUT putting up the rushing numbers that were expected out of him this season. Grab him while he's still available.
Carson Palmer, QB - Oakland Raiders - I know his 297 yards and 1 TD may not be impressive, but what is is the fact that he threw 45 times and has the Dolphins coming up this week. While I don't think the Raiders win this game, I expect them to ditch the run scheme completely and utilize Darren McFadden the way they did in Week 1 vs. the Chargers: repeated dumpoff plays for when Palmer nearly gets killed. Palmer loves to sling it, and with no clear-cut top target, the level playing field amongst WRs and TEs may be beneficial to him in the sense of spreading the ball around. If he can keep the INTs down, he could be a great fantasy QB. And to think, all this without any real receiving threat.
Alfred Morris, RB - Washington Redskins - the Pride of FAU! I've never been more proud to say I'm an Owl (though unfortunately, the bar wasn't set to high). "Alf" punch it in twice against the Saints and though the dreadful fear of owning a Shanahan RB still looms over the temptation of grabbing the guy, but you have to admit that he was incredibly impressive. He didn't make any mental errors, he picked up blitzes well and he ran with confidence and without indecision. Looks good to me.
CJ Spiller, RB - Buffalo Bills - If you could use just one waiver pickup ALL season, this is it. Right here. Grab CJ Spiller, I don't care who your RBs are. Grab him and trade someone else if you want. Oh I'm HIGH on the Spiller train. He was fantastic last year after Fred Jackson went out and now he'll start from Week 2? Give me that any day. THIS MAN will be your new CJ2K.
Kevin Ogletree, QB - Dallas Cowboys - the waiver wire wonder from Wednesday's game against the Giants, Ogletree racked up 114 yards on 8 catches and hit paydirt twice. While most think this was a fluke week against a secondary that was more beat up than the slow-clapping guy from Not Another Teen Movie, one stat that is convincing me otherwise is third down targets. Tony Romo and the Cowboys faced 9 third downs on Wednesday and only ran on one of those. Of the eight passes, six of them went in Ogletree's direction. SIX! For a QB as smart as Romo to trust a no-name WR like Ogletree on multiple third downs tells me that while his numbers won't be 8/114/2-high, they'll still be good.
Brandon LaFell, WR - Carolina Panthers - Though he doesn't post great PPR numbers, his YPC will make up for it this year. Expect an average of about 4-5 catches a game for 80-90 yards. That's LaFell's game. He gets the big plays. He doesn't need the little dink-and-dunk passes because he can just run people down the field. He'll find the endzone now and again, but you'll be fine with his 8-9 point floor every week.
Andre Roberts, WR - Arizona Cardinals - I'm crazy about this guy. With Skelton out and defenses putting 4-5 guys in Larry Fitzgerald's path, Kolb likes to look to his shorter routes. Roberts is a crisp route-runner that makes deceptively clean cuts. He gets separation even in the short-yardage routes and Kolb, while not usually competent, will be mindful of this. Roberts can be a deeper league snatch with huge upside so long as Kolb is under center.
Danny Amendola, WR - St. Louis Rams - He's healthy. He's fast. He's on a team with no other weapons. Find him. Grab him. Start him. Win. If you're in a PPR league, you won't regret having this guy. It'll pay off for you. The Rams get the Redskins in Week 2 and will have to throw since the Skins' LBs are very good at stopping the run. Just pick him up. Do it.
Green Bay Packers D/ST - Even though I have both Brandon Marshall and Matt Forte ranked high this week, I still believe the Packers defense will obliterate Jay Cutler and the makeshift group they call an offensive line. Clay Matthews already has three sacks this season, and I don't expect any less than two more out of him this week. Charles Woodson doesn't take too kindly to trash-talk either, especially when it directed pretty much in his direction. If you have a very safe lineup of studs and happen to be looking for a high-upside defense (that may come with some risk if Chicago goes off), Green Bay is the way to go. Randall Cobb, who I am unnecessarily high on, always provides the possibility of a return TD as well.
