Waiver View: Week 6 (And the Downfall of Runningbacks)

Injuries are just a part of the game, and I understand that. It's just rough when your (my) RBs are Cedric Benson, Ryan Williams and Chris Johnson (AND! AND now Donald Brown). It's been a rough season to say the least. Regardless, in addition to those guys (minus Johnson, who may as well be hurt), the Bears, Saints, Jaguars and Panthers all have bye weeks, so RB is as thin as it's going to get this season.

Well, hopefully (and about 12 hours after I posted this initially, Donald Brown had knee surgery). Week 6 Waiver View:

Kevin Kolb, QB - Arizona Cardinals - Sure he spends just as much time on the ground as he does standing up, but the Bills currently give up the most fantasy points to QBs. And with the RB situation getting somehow continuously worse, they'll likely stray away from the run all together. You'll have your doubts in him, and I don't blame you. But keep in mind that the O-line was just as bad for the first three weeks of the season, yet Kolb and the Cardinals still won comfortably.

Larod-Stephens Howling, RB - Arizona Cardinals - He is slated to be the starter over William Powell and while they don't run very well or often, "The Hyphen" has always made the most of limited snaps. In Week 17 of last season, he ran for 93 yards on just 21 carries. He's certainly proven, but his size may prevent him from remaining a mainstay as an every-down back. Again, he's the starter, but if you have your concerns, look at William Powell, who was a preseason standout and while unproven, he has the size and speed to be the one Arizona's been looking for.

Alex Green, RB - Green Bay Packers - While he will likely put up terrible numbers this coming week against Houston, Cedric Benson is out for at least eight weeks and Green will be the predominant back in Green Bay.

Vick Ballard, RB - Indianapolis Colts - Donald Brown had knee surgery today after hurting it on the last play of the game last Sunday against Green Bay. He'll be out 2-3 weeks. These next three games are fairly favorable for runners (at Jets, home for Cleveland, at Tennessee). Vick Ballard will be the starter in the meantime, and as defenses more and more come to respect Andrew Luck's abilities, the Colts should have some good running games. He's a rental, but the matchups are tasty.

LaGarrette Blount, RB - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - With Doug martin not quite living up to expectations, Blount has been able to retain his minor role as goal-line back. He faces the Chiefs this week, who are awful at everything. I strongly believe Blount gets into the endzone at least once, and while it's only six points, it's more than what Benson, Williams, Forte, Sproles, Chris Johnson (probably), and Jones-Drew are going to get you.

Brandon Bolden, RB - New England Patriots - He's not the feature back. This isn't a run-first offense. He's not high on Tom Brady's list of priorities. BUT, he's getting a bunch of carries, and teh Pats are running far more than anyone expected. Most importantly, the Pats are running whenever they get in scoring position. Yeah, sometimes it's Ridley. BUT, sometimes it's Bolden. And that's enough for me.

Randall Cobb, WR - Green Bay Packers - I'M BACK ON THE BANDWAGON, BABY! Grab him while he's hot, people. Greg Jennings will continue to sit out and since this is probably Jennings's final season as a Packer, the organization has no rush to bring him back while ailing.

Dustin Keller, TE - New York Jets - Rex Ryan is expecting him to play this week against Indy. Keller hasn't played since Week 1 and his previous owner in your league may have possibly dropped him. This will serve as a huge boost to Sanchez's (um...the Jets') receiving corps and if I were a betting man, I'd imagine Keller will pull the most targets on the team against a very beatable defense.

Miami Dolphins D/ST - I'm listing them more as a bye week fill-in rather than a reliable every-week defense. The secondary is a HUGE liability to say the least, but that pass rush is, in colloquial terms, absolutely nasty. As much as I shun the idea of success from ex-Cardinal Karlos Dansby, he and fellow linebacker Kevin Burnett have created an excellent nightmare tandem for quarterbacks. And on top of that, they have that Cameron Wake guy, too. The Rams give up the third-most fantasy points to opposing defenses, so expect a big day for the Dolphins D.

Guys I'm Not As High On, Though Others Seem To Be
Devery Henderson, WR - New Orleans Saints - Fact: Henderson had eight catches for 123 yards and a TD. Fact: Lance Moore wasn't playing. Fact: Jimmy Graham was hardly playing. Fact: Moore and Graham will be back and will take precedence over Henderson as far as targets. Fact: I'm skeptical of Henderson's productivity remaining anything resembling consistent, obviously.
